There was a short program on English TV which did a review of the Manchester Evening News concert 2004. It showed several clips of the show and had the "opinions" of a couple of critics. On this show was an early clip of S&G from the Granada television show shot in Manchester in 1966 (although the caption said 1967).I have always had a great interest in this 1966 show, of which there has only ever been the odd clip shown from time to time.I wish Granada would release this as an official DVD or video. In this performance Simon said that the version of Sound of Silence was the best they ever recorded and he actually contacted Granada TV for a personal copy of the show.In 1996 there was a documentary charting the 40th anniversary of the Granada channel and again Sound of Silence was broadcast in part.I would expect the setlist to be similar to the Haarlem 66 show.
Back in the 1960s Granada was responsible for some of the best music documentaries ever made, eg Johnny Cash live at San Quentin, The Doors live at the Roundhouse, London, The Stones in the Park 1969...all of which have been released officially over the years. So why, I wonder, won´t they release the S&G concert?I wonder if we all lobbied together and generated enough interest that Granada would realise just what they have locked away in their vaults? Now would be an ideal time for them to release this in the wake of the world tour.Has anyone else seen or heard of this show?

Just to add...This 1966 S&G concert was produced by John Shepherd and was made when S&G came over to England originally to appear on "Top of the Pops" and Shepherd managed to convince them that "an hour with me would be better than a few minutes on Top of the Pops".Hence they did the show.I believe this was only ever shown in the Granada region (which is the North West of England)so was never seen by all that many people.DOES ANYONE HAVE A NICE RELATION WHO WORKS FOR GRANADA??We MUST have this concert......mustn´t we?

I am with you all the way Bing. I live in Bradford and think we should start lobbying outside Granada asap. Perhaps a nicely worded letter may persuade them to unearth the archive in some form??

I well remember the clips you refer to i also thought I recalled a scene involving them on a railway station Widnes?? or a studio mock up? I had contact with a documentary researcher at Granada last year about an archive programme for the NW - her email is [email protected]. With you mentioning it being filmed in 66 this made me think that maybe that when I saw them at the Free Trade Hall might have been 66 and not 67, which is when I always thought it was - my "O" Level year! Does anyone know for sure??

Yes, Martin, S&G played the Free trade hall, Manchester in 1967 for certain as part of a very short tour of England....I think only a couple of shows. There are 6 recordings around which are believed to be from this concert.
