For those who don´t know it already I reccomend you try to put your hands and ears on Bridge sung by mrs. Franklin. If you´re even barely alive this should be enough to make your day...amazing.(beware: nothing like the original so be prepared!)

Yes, it?s considered by a lot of people the best cover of Bridge. It was the ?bridge? to more black listeners to S&G songs. There are more then 200 covers. The royalties for that song alone, made Paul a bigggg millionaire.

I still like the S&G original version the best.

I just heared this version. It says nothing to me :o(

The most, I like the classic way, sung by Art. And I do really like the versions that Paul made, especially the 2nd verse on the Old Friends Tour.

But I don´t really like Arethas version..... The flow of the melody is completely away. She surely has a nice voice, but it doesn´t fit for this song IMHO.

In the "Father & Daughter" Interview recorded on New York radio, Simon regards Aretha Franklyn´s version of "Bridge" as his favourite. The interview is around 60 minutes and is a great insight into the writing process of his songs. This one is totally about the musical influences and songwriting of Simon´s career.

I know that Arethas version is even Pauls favourite cover version of the song. I listened to the song a few more times, but I still cannot find any "magic" in this version.
Seems to be just not my taste of music, this gospel thing :o)

I´m with Kuno on this one. Gospel is all well and good in a little church in deepest Mississippi, but I like the original. Amazing Grace in gospel....ok. Star Spangled Banner, maybe. Bridge? No. It´s already a long song. When the Gospelites get to it, like the Jessy Dixon singers etc the bloody song seems to go on forever and simply never end!! Like Homeward Bound on the last tour!!

@Bluesmoke
Yes, yes you are right...it is a gospel, because Paul said so....and it is a great cover version, because Paul said so...

I really would like to know if you would find the Aretha version that great, when you wouldn´t have the information that Paul considers it at the best cover version.

You are either very distracted or you have serious problems.
I posted this topic BEFORE I knew Paul liked Aretha´s version the best, this is obvious if you re-read the topic. Bing told me, I didn´t know. That´s why I asked him where he found the interview.
As for your first point, that I say BOTW a gospel because Paul says so well, what can I say, you obviously have no understanding of music whatsoever. It´s not ARGUABLE if a piece is gospel or not! It´s like saying to someone that he thinks that "sweet home chicago" is a blues because Robert Johnson or BB King say so!Madness...

Since I have no understanding of music..what is the (or your) definition of gospel ?

I really doubt that BOTW can be considered as a gospel song.

If you make a gospel song out of BOTW...then you have what Aretha did. It may sound nice, but the magic of the melody is completely away, in my opinion.

eh just to put the cat amongst the pidgeons - kinda like Johnny Cash´s version and I think I heard Tom Waite (or someone like him) singing it and thought it was good. Not having heard AF I´d imagine a womans voice would be too sweet!!

I cannot believe that you continue to doubt it´s a gospel! I cannot give you the 5 golden rules which make a gospel just like I can´t give you the 5 golden rules which make a jazz, rock, fusion or brasilian piece. The Mood to the song is totally gospel(and that´s what gospel´s all about), the chord progression is tipical of a gospel(obviously embellished by some variations but the structure is there), and in its original form(not aretha cover) it is intentionally PLAYED in a gospel style. And oh...by the way...you may want to take into account that the AUTHOR told you it´s a gospel, but then again, what does he know?

Okay, so Aretha changed a gospel song into a gospel song. That´s why Arethas versions sounds exactly like the original version, doesn´t it ?

To be serious... I have a friend who is a musician and knows much about this stuff. I will ask him about that.

I still don´t agree with "the mood is totally gospel" etc. but there is a small chance that, in a very technical way, this song can be considered as a gospel. I have to admit that, because I don´t know the exact definition of gospel.

I will let you know.

Bluesmoke, thanks for the discussion so far...(hope it goes on) Please don´t mind that I was a very little agressive (don´t know the exact word) in my last postings. I just like to argue :o)
Maybe I am on your side again in another topic.
