this is one of my favorite songs that Paul Simon has written. it is beautiful and is beautifully written. lyrically, it doesnt say as much as most of his songs do, but what it does say, it says clearly and wonderfully.

i have always loved it when Paul is by himself with just a guitar and this song is a good reason why i should. it is so intimate and personal and honest (i am assuming that he wrote this song because of what he was dealing with in his relationship to carrie fisher). but the music is what really makes this song. it adds so much to the lyrics.

this is a song that i never hear about, but have always personally loved. i hope that someday i will get the chance to see paul perform this song live, though it is such a slight chance.

has anyone else stopped and enjoyed this song like i have?

Everything Put Together Falls Apart

Paraphernalia
Never hides your broken bones
And I don?t know why
You want to try
It?s plain to see you?re on your own
Oh, I ain?t blind, no
Some folks are crazy
Others walk that borderline
Watch what you?re doing

Taking downs to get off to sleep
And ups to start you on your way
After a while they?ll change your style
I see it happening every day
Oh spare your heart
Everything put together
Sooner or later falls apart
There?s nothing to it, nothing to it
And you can cry
You can lie
For all the good it?ll do you
You can die
But when it?s done
And the police come, and they lay you down for dead
Just remember what I said

i forgot to mention this:

i think what i like most about this song lyrically is how specific the content is, with the exception of one line that is also the songs title.

the song is obviously commenting on a specific situation and it is very personal, but then it makes this very general comment about how EVERYTHING put together falls apart. it is a very interesting statement and makes the song a lot more than it would be with out that line.

Nice observation, Jefferson Street! Since the moment I first heard this song, I have the strong impression that he is scratching himself between ?There?s nothing to it? and ?nothing to it?. I can hear it better on the record then now on cd, after the remastering, but still. What?s your opinion?

O, and for the record: you are talking about problems in the relationship with the ´wrong´ wife - it´s about Peggy Harper, his first wife. The same as in ´Sail on silvergirl´ (she had on a young age already grey hair).

oh yeah, i totally hear him scratching what sounds like his unshaven neck at that part of the song. that was one of the things that attracted me to the song so much. it gave the song another deminsion because then i could SEE this happening which made it so that i could see him playing the whole song and it is like he is playing right in front of me for just the two of us. i Love that they left it in. i am glad that you brought that up.

so peggy had an addiction problem too? i didnt know that. that is interesting. thanks for pointing that out. where did you hear or read this?

Yes, I have exactly the same picture in my head when I listen to the song: scratching at his jaw.
About his first wife Peggy: well, I can?t remember reading that she had a serious addiction problem. What I do know is that he wrote and recorded this song when they were married for one or two years. And then there are his own lines in this song. But, don?t make it bigger then it is. See it in its time. There is a saying, I even believe Paul used it in an interview once, that every Jew in Manhattan visits a psychiatrist and is on medication ? it?s as natural as breathing.
