 | OK, I gotta question for my fellow Simon Soldiers ... now answer honestly and don´t go with the crowd ´cuz this is an actual conflict in this mind of mine:
Which album is better: GRACELAND or RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS.
Be true to your soul ... |

 | IMO Graceland is better.
Nothing against ROTS.... it´s one of the best albums as well....but nothing can beat Graceland ! |

 | Graceland. ROTS is Graceland part two for me. Part one is always better. |

 | The Rhythm Of The Saints. I like the drums and percussion very much. Also the meaning of the lyrics are worldly-wise, the issues he speaks of in songs like Can´t Run But(very good song),Born At The Right Time.
I also like The Coast, Further To Fly, Spirit Voices. There is not one weak song on this album IMO. |

 | Graceland. in an interview with rolling stone in 2000 paul was commenting on his career and what each album has meant to him. when he came to graceland he said a lot of nice things, but when he mentioned ROTS he said that it said nothing new and was a copy of graceland. i completely agree. of course there are some good sides to it, after all, it still is Paul Simon, but graceland came out of nowhere, while ROTS just came out of graceland. make sense? thats my couple of cents, for what its worth. |

 | For sure, Graceland has a political resonnances, even if it wasn´t the aim of the album, many people discovered the situation in south africa through it, as well as the fantastic sound of south african music ! and please stop calling everybody "soldiers" soldiers make war ! |

 | Cool ... thanks for your responses, soliders!
Ans and I are in the same boat. I have always enjoyed Rhythm Of The Saints more than Graceland. Graceland is a great album. And I think it´s "shock value" has a lot to do with why I think it´s so great. But ROTS has a lot more songs that I feel are great individually.
It´s like Graceland is great as a whole. But I can hear any of the tunes on ROTS by themselves and say that each of those songs are great. "The Cool, Cool River" has always been one of my favorites. "Can´t Run But" and "Born At The Right Time," as well. I can go on, but I´ll just end up listing all the tracks.
Anyway, at the risk of taking away from the gem that is Graceland, I´m gonna go ahead and say that ROTS is a better record.
Gosh, that almost sounds blasphemous. |

 | ROTS - Simply because Simon has really written all these songs. On Graceland most of the songs are adaptations of other African songs. He changed they key and has add 1 or 2 instruments and said it´s a new song.
Especially examples are: Gumboots, Crazy Love, That Was Your Mother or All Around The World.
These songs (not the lyrics) didn´t really grow out of Paul´s head. And also on most of the other tracks he had to share writters credits with some musicians.
The album is good, but it´s more like a collaboration of a few bands and musicians on enhancing and rewritting African songs.
ROTS is pure Simon. |
