With the new album on the way I'm curious as to what everyone's favorite "modern" Simon album is. This would include anything post 2000. So You're the One forward. For me it's So Beautiful or So What. The textures of the music combined with the beautiful lyrics and melodies blows me away every time I hear it. The new album sounds like it'll be almost as good though I think Sbosw will remain my favorite.

Difficult to explain just how much this album means to me. Hardly a day goes by I do not listen to it.

Good music is modern for centuries.

Look at Bach, Beethoven, Sibelius etc.

Ravel`s Bolero is quite simple but the trick is that he repeated the nice melody several times always adding additional instruments to make it more powerful.

And it works!-

And it is modern.

Surprise is also important to me, but I feel that the competition will be tough with Stranger :)
SBOSW, I like it too
YTO is the only one with which I struggled to tie me

Surprise really is one of his all time best. I agree on all the songs you listed Pelle, though my favorite from that album is "I Don't Believe."

Very true Klausi. I just meant modern in the sense of more recent albums. I guess I should have said more recent albums. lol

Another vote for Surprise.... which seems wholly successful to me, Paul pulls off that trick where his fast intelligent lyrics skip in and out of the rhythms. An absolute joy to listen to.

You're The One has some high spots (Hurricane Eye, Senorita, Love) but they seem to be evenly balanced with some weaker tracks. And SBOTW doesn't really get going for me until track 3 Dazzling Blue, Rewrite i find the stop/start sound collage irritating , before we get on to three or four really excellent songs... I kind of like some SBOTW songs but not the album as a whole...

And then going back further I'd put Capeman up alongsides Surprise at the top of the recent (-ish) work. I'm hoping Stranger to Stranger will be another great album, i guess at this stage i'd readily settle for some great songs which i'm sure we'll always get from Paul.

I do also love the Surprise-album (5 out of 5 stars). That's Me and EAIIALS is up there among Paul's best work. This album is perfect to listen with headphones and you'll discover new sounds and details every time. It's a shame that this album has gone under the radar to most people except the more hardcore fans, but let's hope that it will get it's "revenge" some day. These songs are not ideal for live perfomences and maybe therefore this album seems to be forgotten.
SBOSW (4/5) and YTO (3/5) are also more than listenable and albums of high quality compared to most albums after 2000. But to me these albums are more great songs (Rewrite, L&B, GRFCD, Darling Lorraine, Senorita) and some not so great songs (L&HT, Afterlife, Look at That, Pigs/Sheeps) than a hole piece as Surprise is.

Might be so beautiful... :)
So what?
It has some more relaxing songs, some real beautiful ballads. Surprise makes me nervous now.

Listening now, I even like YTO a lot, it has so fine balanced percussions. I own this album as a DTS surround sound version (yes, it sounds different).
Did they ever release any other albums in DTS surround sound?

BTW: The most underrated album will always be the Capeman I think.
Even here it is not allowed to show up in this voting list :-). It is somewhere in between Pauls most successfull area (Graceland-ROTS) and the "new albums".

But he spend years on writting all those Capeman songs. And I do not know any other "Doo-woop Carribean style music album"
