  | Thank you Bjoern
I simply think that Paul is trying to change the sound of his band a little bit - so I am sure it was not anything personal against Tony. So lets see how many people are in the band for 2016, maybe he even downsized it more? In the last 25 years the band changed a lot...from 13++ musicians in 1991 to around ten in 1999...and then he nearly completelely skipped the horn section (just sax now), only 1 percussion...
Tony played trumpet, who is doing that now? |

  | C J Camierieri played trumpet on the Sting/Simon Tours and will also be on the new tour Bodo. He is very talented and can also play French Horn and keyboards. He also played on the new record. Marcus Rojas played tuba on the Sting /Simon tour .Bruce Sunpie Barnes played zydeco accordian. Not sure if the last two will be on the next tour but C J definitely is. |

  | It seems as today only playing 1 instrument to perfection is not enough for beeing a member in Pauls band ;-) (and hey, Tony played accordeon, keyboards, trumpet and guitar...)
Saying that: I hope for Vincent he does not have to learn playing the violine. It would look funny indeed ;-)
Yes, I feel sad Tony is not on tour with Paul anylonger. He toured with Paul since 1986...would be the 30 years anniversary now. Thats a number!
And he did everything, playing every song, had no problem to be a backup on guitars or trumpet. Wasnt he perfect? (just compare him with Vincent...sorry, I have a feeling he is only playing the 3th guitar in that band after Mark and Jim.. I do not want to start saying bad words here, but a replacement of Vincent would not have surprised me. His only bonus is the deep voice for Diamonds)

  | Klausi - we could assume Tony is too expensive for Pauls band too ;-)
We never know... maybe he asked for changing that old contract back from 1985, that pays him 45$ an hour... (just kidding - seriously kidding.. I hope)

  | Tony probably left the band when he remarried a few months after the 2013 tour ended and he moved to Cape Town where his wife Tania Kleinhans lives. He seems to be immersed in South African culture and is leading a very full life. This recent article in Jan 2016 is very interesting and he has nothing but good words to say about Paul.

This was his comment on FB to the article .
Thank You All...our ancestral home was calling for a long time...come full circle...i want to encourage all our artists...to impart our blessed gifts for our future generations..
Tony was a great ,talented and much appreciated member of Paul's band for many years but people move on to different chapters in their lives. His homeland was calling him. Good luck to him in his new life.
Don't agree with you about Vince's guitar playing, Bodo. Paul seems very fond of Vince and I could never see him being replaced.

 | Vincent is the King of Cameroon, a master guitar player! He contributed so much to Paul's music, live and on the studio albums.

  | When watching the videos of the last 10 years I often see Mark playing all the guitar Solos and leads. Then Jim, a Drummer, came and He has his own atkins Solo Session on guitar. Vincent is agood guitar Player, but I do not see anything outstanding. And in Pauls Band everone now plays 2, 3 or 6 Instruments...
Thanks for the link to the articles about tony Brenda! |

 | For the intro and the end of "Diamonds" Vincent is needed, I cannot say something about his guitar playing. Eric Gale had a very uncommon style to play guitar, almost with one finger. But very effective.
My opinion is that Mark Stewart ist the biggest win for Paul, when did he met him?
He plays several instruments including his voice.
On Paul`s version of Peter Gabriel`s Biko he is the only musician, and this version is great! |

  | I saw Mark the first time in 1999, so I guess when Paul formed a new band for the Dylan/Simon tour he found him. For the first leg of this tour he also had trumpet player Chris Botti with him.
Yes, Mark is IMO the center of the band. He is also the one re-hearsing the band when Paul does not show up in the afternoon. So his job is way above than just playing an instrument.
Usually I only see Vincent doing a primary-guitar solo on Diamonds and (if played) The Coast or maybe Proof. The rest of the time he seems to play rhythm guitar. Now of course his guitar playing becomes more important when Mark has to jump in playing other instruments. But again, the Obvious child does not have a guitar solo at all.
BTW: I am even not sure about Diamonds, years back I asked Mark what his favourite song is when playing and he said Diamonds.

  | BTW Brenda: I am really shocked to read that Tony has had no idea how to play an accordeon (or did not play one in 26 years...but how old was he in 1986?). Does Tony mean a specific kind of accordeon (compared to harmonica for example?)
Otherwise it is more than strange that he was the accordeon player in Pauls band for nearly 30 years.

  | How Mark joined Paul's Band
How did you become the Music Director for Paul Simon, and eventually for Guitar Mash as well?
I was suddenly in the Broadway world, and I did that for about 5 years and one night I was playing the opening night at Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center and Paul Simon was there that night. I was the head musician and at the reception at Tavern on the Green, he had a lot of questions for me, and the last one was, “Can I get your phone number ?”(laughs). So he came over just a couple of days later and we had a great afternoon together. A month later, I joined his band. I’ve been playing with Paul since ’98. And yeah, I get to play everything with Paul — guitar, cello, wind instruments, banjo…it’s just a lovely gig.
