Last tour for Simon & Garfunkel?

NEW YORK -- Fans couldn´t help but be curious last fall when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel strode onstage to open their reunion concerts with the song "Old Friends."

Old friends, yes. But still friends?

The boyhood chums have been famously estranged through the years, the classic example of a duo that made sweet music onstage and hit sour notes when the lights went down.

Now, however, "my friendship with Artie is back to where it was when we were 12 years Old," Simon told The Associated Press. "We´re laughing and kidding around all the time. It´s a lot of fun."

Agreed Garfunkel: "We are remarkably like brothers in our musical calling and our senses of humor."

Good vibes. Without them, Simon & Garfunkel probably wouldn´t be going out on the road again this summer, starting June 10 in Albany. The $64.5 million in ticket sales for the first leg of the "Old Friends" tour probably helped their mood, too.

They may be friends again, but that doesn´t mean they always see eye to eye. In the course of two interviews, they disagreed on whether Simon & Garfunkel has a recording future, a touring future beyond this summer and whether a change in their show for Europe was politically motivated.

Last fall, during the song "America," a video montage ran on screens behind the two singers, showing images of the nation during the past 40 years. That will be either changed or eliminated when the tour moves to Europe.

"It´s what an artist does when he feels the name of his country speaks too loudly and too provocatively (that) it pushes the music aside," Garfunkel said, somewhat cryptically. He wouldn´t comment further.

Simon said it will be altered to be more appropriate to Europeans.

"It´s not a political statement," he said. "It´s a geographic reality."

The singers´ repertoire is kept strictly to the Simon & Garfunkel recordings, except for Simon´s early 1970s solo recordings "Slip Slidin´ Away" and "American Tune." Trying to balance the duo material with more solo work would have been too difficult, Simon said.

"It´s particularly appropriate now to stay locked into a time capsule, because it has a lot of resonance," he said. "The power of the elapsed time adds emotion to the songs. A lot of these songs, even back then, were dealing with the passage of time."

Simon was in his early 20s when he wrote a line in the song "Old Friends" about being 70. The idea that he´s performing the song at age 62 "is still shocking to me," he said.

Simon spoke from his office in the Brill Building, a legendary location for songwriters during the 1960s. His walls were covered with old posters and album covers, along with the New York Yankees fan´s impressive collection of baseball memorabilia.

Garfunkel talked at his three-story apartment off New York´s Central Park, shortly before leaving on a trip to continue a walking tour of Europe.

Preparing for the show was difficult in an odd, unexpected way, Simon described. For most people, their memory of Simon & Garfunkel is two singers, one guitar. But the old recordings usually had full bands. The challenge was being true to the fans´ memories yet updating the sound. The duo travels with a seven-piece band.

The tour gave Simon a greater appreciation for what Garfunkel´s voice meant to his music.

"The sound of the two voices is unique," he said. "The fact that the Everly Brothers are part of the show really connects us to our beginnings. Just the fact of duo singing is a powerful thing. It´s gone."

Between the Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel and John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles, the sound of two voices blending to make a sound distinct from each alone is a powerful thing, he said. It sounds shocking today because no one is doing it, he said.

"I find Paul at his absolute best," Garfunkel said. "He is a benign papa, with that same considerable talent and a beautiful work ethic. I Love people who respect their work."

Seeing the duo isn´t a cheap date. The average ticket price for a Simon & Garfunkel show last fall was $136.90, well above the industry average of around $50, according to Pollstar magazine.

"It´s a hard subject," Garfunkel said. "It puts me on the defensive. I didn´t make the ticket price. I´m involved in it, my profit is related to it. Am I squeezing the American people? Well, if they show up and say we´re happy to buy your ticket price and come see the show, who am I to say you shouldn´t be happy?"

Garfunkel said he´s had great fun with the reunion, which he called "an open-ended experience." The idea of new recordings from Simon & Garfunkel is "a very interesting and feasible possibility," he said.

That may be wishful thinking.

Although they´re preparing a CD and DVD recording of their Madison Square Garden from last fall, Simon doesn´t expect any new music from the duo.

"I think we´re about what we were," not what we could be in the future, he said. Simon is halfway through a new album, an intriguing partnership with soundscape engineer Brian Eno.

He also predicted it would be the last time on the road for Simon & Garfunkel.

"If it was an ongoing act where there was new material being recorded and you were working that into the repertoire, maybe there would be some justification," Simon said. "But I think this is a good example of the music that we made and I don´t really see any powerful reason to do it again, because we did it. It´s not a Shermanesque declaration. It´s just how I feel."

Merci pour cet article JB ! Intéressant de voir que Paul et Art ne sont pas toujours sur la même longueur d´ondes mais ça, on pouvait s´en douter ! Et ouf : apparemment, pas de nouvel album du duo ! Et Brian Eno comme producteur du nouvel opus de Paul ? J´espère qu´ils vont nous surprendre !

Je suis d´ccord qu´un nouvel album des deux réunis n´est pas le bienvenu.

Long time no see...

C´est une bonne nouvelle ça le pairage avec Eno...Simon va peut-être encore nous surprendre. La moins bonne nouvelle, c´est qu´on parle qu´il est "halfway" dans la production de l´album...puisqu´il ne travaillera pas fort là-dessus cet été, je commence à douter d´une parution pour l´automne...

Mais, au fait, j´y pense...lorsque le nouvel album sortira...le coffret 1972-2000 ne sera plus à jour...bonne idée pour en sortir un autre dans deux ans ! ah ah ah !!

Je suis d´accord aussi que nous n´avons pas besoin d´un DVD de la "réunion"...mais ne vous en faites pas, ils ne vont pas nous écouter et ils vont le sortir pareil...et vous savez quoi ? On va l´acheter quand même ! ah ah ah !

Avez-vous la réponse de Garfunkel au sujet des prix des billets (cf. l´article) ? Traduction : si le monde sont assez cons pour payer ces prix-là, pourquoi me sentirais-je coupable ? Pas fort, pas fort, mon Art !

les vieux sont de nouveau copains...
Ils se marrent bien...
Art est désolé du prix des places mais...(voir Mog)
Tout ce que je retiens: c´est que c´est la der des ders pour les tournées S&G...
qu´il n´y aura pas de nouvel album S&G
et que le "simon nouveau" est annoncé...bien!
Espérons que la vendange sera bonne

C´est vrai qu´Art dans cete interview semble quelque peu nous prendre pour des imbéciles et j´ai pas trop apprécié !

Quant au DVD, je ne l´achèterai pas et je me le ferai simplement offrir :-)(à moins que je ne l´emprunte à quelqu´un pour le copier ! ;-))

Mais juste une chose : que voulez-vous que dise Garfunkel ?
-"C´est cher mais c´est normal : attends, c´est nous !" (personne n´apprécierait)
-"Si vous n´êtes pas content, c´est pareil" (même commentaire)

Le "c´est cher, c´est pas voulu mais bon, ça se vend..." c´est tout ce qu´il peut répondre. Car si les billets sont si chers, c´est que Garfunkel ET Simon l´ont voulu (ou du moins accepté).

Enfin, il n´a pas tort...si les billets avaient été boycottés, ils auraient sûrement baissé les prix...

Donc voilà, je les défends pas, mais je les comprends (en plus je fais partie de ces "cons" qui ont acheté des billets -__-)

OK Panda... mais ce qui ne me plait pas trop c´est qu´on se serve de l´argument:
"Les 2 vieux copains qui ne chantaient plus ensembles se retrouvent pour une tournée unique et définitive"
Profitez en ...On vous blouze peut-être avec le prix des places...mais tant qu´à être con vaut mieux payer trop cher l´événement... que de rater "cette rencontre extraordinaire entre le soleil et Venus" que vous ne pourrez pas revoir de toute votre vie...
Je n´aime pas trop être manipulé de la sorte...et ce qui devrait être une "fête" me laisse un goût plutôt amer...

ca m´agace ce comportement de leur part!!! biensur, nous sommes assez cons pour avoir acheté ces billets, mais en profiter pour monter les prix, cest effectivement, vraiment de la manipulation!!! j aimerai bien savoir a quoi tout cet argent va leur servir!!! je crois qu´il ne faudrait plus leurs accorder un forum et autant de ´reconnaissances´, autant art que paul, il ne le merite pas!!!
ca, cest se croire au dessus du petit peuple d´en bas!!! se prendre pour des dieux!!!
ca me desole de prendre connaissances de tout ca juste avant d´aller à ce concert!! evidement, on pouvait s´y attendre, mais je me refusait un peu de me l´avouer, pour qu´il reste au moin un peut de magie!!!

Salut Buba, ç´est chouette de te relire...Mais peut-être es tu en pleins examens en ce moment ?
J´apprecie toujours tes coups de colère, qui sont ceux de la jeunesse qui se révolte contre toutes ces injustices ou contraintes de la vie...
plus agé, on réagit moins, voire même plus et c´est grave...Restes comme tu es, surtout...
Tu fais le procès de nos "chères deux vieilles idoles" mais je crois qu´ils sont dans un système mercantile de show-business et qu´ils se laissent faire ...après tout, c´est plutôt à leur avantage...
C´est sûr que quand on repense au Simon 1970/72 on est convaincu qu´il aurait préféré "bouffer" de la vache enragée que de se fourvoyer dans ce type de "trip"...
Mais il faut peut-être se rendre à l´évidence...avec le temps...avec l´opportunité...avec la facilité...c´est plus cool de se laisser aller...ne plus se battre, laisser d´autres tout organiser à sa place...n´avoir à s´occuper que du solde de son compte en banque ... et se retrancher derrière des arguments du type:
-si les gens sont assez "gentils" pour prendre des places et que ça les rend heureux... (tu parles)
Ce que peut-être nous oublions aussi c´est que ce qui nous choque, ne choque pas un américain qui n´a pas un même rapport avec le fric...et qui trouve tout à fait normal que l´on profite au maximum d´une place, d´une situation ou d´une opportunité et qui considére , au contraire, avec dédain celui qui ne rentre pas dans le moule...mais c´est juste mon avis
