  | Ireland is something so special :-) (not joking!)
I think the irish have a much more appreciation for good music - and if you visit Ireland you also do it for the (folk) music. I do not know if the young irish people do care about your folk music, but in Austria all (ok 95%) of the young people really find our folk music laughable, silly and ashaming, and the tourists come just for the music of Mozart, Schubert and whoever.
Anyway, Cohen is also very popular here in Austria, and I have no clue why: I just checked, he played here 7 concerts(!) since 2008
Loking at his 2008-2010 tour list I can understand that he gave much more concerts in a short time and came back to the same places after 1-2 years - so maybe thats the success.

Anyway - we know that Cohen needs the money to pay his taxes. ;-)

 | Hi Bodo,I am not sure how serious Paul was when he said that about not having a fanbase anymore, overall the NY Times article gives the impression they were playing around a little bit and being facetious. I know in the past he had some concerns about his fanbase, doing a tour with Bob Dylan and the reunion concert in CP81. The other thing I notice in his interviews is that he gets bored doing the same kind of tour every time. And from what I see and read he loves to do collaborations, in the last tours he often invites other musicians/singers to join him for a song or two. I think the main reason for this tour is 'a spirit of musical exploration'. I was pleasantly surprised when I read an interview with Sting and noticed how much they think alike about songwriting. I agree with you that the big arenas are played because of Stings bigger fanbase and hopefully Paul benefits from that :)
You are right that not all his fans have the opportunity to see a lot of his shows. Wasn't there a show in Austria (2008?) cancelled because of the bad weather?

  | Yeah that was really bad that the concert in 2008 was cancelled. There was one friend of mine which I 'made' to a Paul Simon fan before, and he bought tickets to go to the concert, he was already in that city and then the concert was cancelled (I was in South America that summer...). But also in 2011 promoters tried to invite Paul Simon to come again (this time not doing an open air, but playing in Vienna), but eventually the tour plans did not go that far to the south.
I listened to Sting and bougth 1 or 2 of his compilations about 15 years ago, but then I lost interest (nor paticulary reason...). An interesting fact is, that Sting was much more funky with his band and solo he is a little bit too soft for me - and Paul is the opposite, too sweet as S&G :-)
Oh, and I remember Chris Botti is playing in Stings band... well you could even say that Chris Botti changed the team (just joking ;-) Somehow Paul was the first who had him in a band, but in late 1999 he became a regular member of Stings band. So maybe he and Paul will be on stage again. But hey, saxophone is a much more 'sexy' sounding instrument than trumpet - high five for Andy Snitzer :-) |

Have you ever listened to Miles Davis, Bodo ;-)

 | Miles Davis is the best :) I have a few albums of Chris Botti, nice to listen to but I also love Andy Snitzer. His latest album The Rhythm is very good and doing nice on the charts. Agree with Bodo that Stings music is technically good but a bit soft for me too just like S&G ;-) |

  | Should be very interesting set list. Paul asked Sting to sing "Bridge" Hopefully as well as singing some of each other's songs they will also perform together.

  | And "America" - it seems that Sting is really a Garfunkel replacement ;-) But Paul hasn't written many duet songs in his solo career...hm, they will definately do only hits as a duet, so "Love" is no option. They could do Gone at last, but is Sting a gospel guy? |

 | It will be interesting to see if and how the tour will evolve when the bands start to play together.
Fragile is a good choice, curious what kind of cover Paul will make of it.

 | Brenda, I'm not complaining. I'm just saying as it is, and Paul has never been an artist that tours especially much. |

  | Interstingly the first Sting song I ever heard was the spanish version of Fragile [Fragildad] (I am sure I have heard some of his songs before, but I did not know him or who the singer was). I like the spanish version a lot. That was an easy choice for Paul, this one fits his voice perfect. I guess it will be hard for Paul to sing "Roxanne" ;-) |

 | I agree Bodo - teenage rebellion here objects to christy Moore our best folk singer/songwriter but by the time they reach their 20s they are the biggest fans ever! As for trad music - I was at the fleadh in Derry last summer (1st time outside the republic) and the amount of kids involved was amazing - the streets were full of 7 to 15 year olds ( and older) playing fiddles uilleann pipes, tin whistles etc in every available corner.
However ........ Garth brooks has just announced his come back tour and starting where?? Croke park Dublin our largest stadium and the response has been hysterical !!! |

  | My son was born in Australia and loved Irish music from a very early age. At age five he could sing every verse of the "Streets of New York". He still loves Irish music. |
