 | LOL !!!!
Folks: with all due respect, tempest in a teapot !
Me I just found that Simon's comment to Sting was lacking nuances. I found it disrespectful for us that have been there for so long.
Of course, he does not have the base like Lady GaGa. The man has not had any chart hits in the last 25 years ! He is still known, he is part of the legends, he is highly-respected, the indie trends brought him younger fans. There are lots of good news for him. |

 | Hi Bodo,
Well, the story is that Paul went with his two sons to the basketball game, he was also interviewed about his upcoming tour a while ago on another game. He and his youngest son are big sport fans and when they visit a game the media picks that up and writes about it or want an interview of him.
I know this group has always been critical but these days there are so many critical comments and not always based on the right facts. And than I start to wonder if there is überhaupt any appreciaton left for Paul here. But maybe you are right and am I to critical about the writing on this forum. The thing is that for the last few years I often hesitate to post some news here because there always seems something to moan about. So I guess I have changed and I was never good in recognizing cynical humor...
I will try to be less critical about the writing here and I understand it can not only be love, love, kiss, kiss but too much criticism doesn't work either....

  | Paul has always being photographed and videoed at sports events sitting close to other well known people. Just off the top of my head remember Ashley Olsen ,Greg Norman at the US Open tennis, Mary Blige at a basketball game in Dallas 2010 and of course Art and Paul at Yankee game in 2010. Always with at least one of his kids. This one just got more publicity because of who the lady was.
I do agree with Ans though, that there are too many critical comments on here often based on incorrect facts. There is so much to appreciate about Paul and his music and the joy it brings to most of us. It's just great he is still producing great work. Be nice to read some posts about this. |

 | Hi Bodo,
Leonard Cohen's songs are not less brilliant as Paul's IMHO |

  | Hm, I am not sure why this discussion went into that direction... if I read back all the comments I still think it was only a discussion about why Paul said "I have no fanbase anymore"... and well, I tried to find an explanation for that.
Now it is a discussion about why I always write bad comments to every news, but I can hardly find any of them(?). I thought now maybe it is better to stay away from the forum, but hey, I think it was very quiet in December, so this is the first discussion we have since many weeks :-)
I have no clue where this discussion goes...
Michiel: What I wanted to say is: Cohne has written songs in the same style for his fan-base since the 1970s, so he still could reactivate them easely.
Paul is making more experiments, he changes his style of writting and songmaking and his sound - we ALL here love that (I love it!) - but the usual fan is either still asking for another S&G like album or "Graceland-like" songs. So if he doesn't write songs like that they turn around and leave... Thats still no bad comment I hope, it is just my explanation why he has lost a big part of his fans from earlier times, that other artists could hold. Well, we saw him at the Graceland tour and there he could fill arenas with 10 up to parks with 50.000 people - so it might be easy to re-activate a fanbase. But it is okay if he does no want to do that - for making better and new music he loves much more now. |

 | The number of tours between 1999 - 2013 is not telling the whole truth. Paul Simon hasn't done (I think?) a big extensive world tour since 1991. Instead he goes on a short tours in the U.S. or 4-6 countries in Europe. The following year this pattern is repeated, maybe som other European countries will be lucky. |

 | Taking one line of text from an article pulls it often out of context but my concern was more about the criticism in general that seems to predominate on this forum, not only from you Bodo but other members too.
I guess we just think different about Paul's career. I really like it that Paul follows his own path and doesn't write songs to make his fans happy. We all know he has been a slow writer all his life and I admire him for only bringing out a new album when he thinks he has something to say, I prefer quality over quantity :)
About touring, I know fans want him to tour all the time all over the world but he is not that kind of an artist. Besides his music career there are other things which are important for him, his family, CHF and other charities he supports, sports ;-)
I know this might sound too much as love love but I like to focus on the good qualities, that's why I am a fan...
But to have a good discussion you need different opinions :)

  | You missed out Australia, New Zealand. Japan ,Taiwan Singapore, Israel Hakan. He has been twice to Australia and New Zealand since 2009.(one as S and G). In 2011 SBOSW tour there were around 85 venues. Not bad for a seventy year old. Much of the latter years in the nineties were taken up with the Capeman so touring was out of the question. In 1991 he was 50 years old and single with no family commitments. He has stated he does not like to spend too much time away from his home and family. Kudos to him for that. |

 | Re Leonard Cohan v Paul Simon - LC is very popular here he has had concerts every year for the last 5 years and not just one but three each time. Each concert is packed!! He is always being requested on radio especially the program I always listen to. Yet anytime I send in a request for a Paul Simon song no matter how recent it is it gets played - and gets great response from other listeners and the presenter. all Paul Simon concerts are booked out pretty quickly but not immediately like LCs. The fan base is there ok but like Paul keeps a very low profile. |

  | Hi Ans - I absolute agree with you, Paul follows his own way and writes songs beside what the usual fan would expect (I like that). I think (? hope) I never questioned that.
But on the other side I have a feeling he still wants to be the famous musician playing in big arenas - maybe it is just my feeling, but when he said he has "lost his fanbase" so it sounds like he is confused about this fact AND he is going on tour with Sting or with the old Graceland band because "he can not play arenas anymore alone". So it seems to me that he is trying to do the split between "making his own thing" and on the other hand "playing big concerts".
Maybe he better should have said that in the last 1-2 decades he turned his mind to become an indie act ;-)
:-)
But (maybe?) this is the only possible way to tour with such a big and extreme good (and I guess therefore expensive) band and crew.
About the touring: I know he is touring every year and he has even done down under now, so I think that is more than enough to catch him (as a fan) - although if I am just a "normal" fan I would not have seen Paul since the year 2002 (Munich), cause in Europe he only tours somewhere in Northeast ;-) - I would have had 3 chances to see Leonard Cohne BTW, he was even in my hometown... :-) |
