I'm sure most of you checked the link in the nu.nl article as well to the NY Times with the original article of Nov.4. For those who did not, for your convenience here it is:

'I am not sure I have a fan base anymore'

Dark humor ? I hope so Paul, because that's pretty insulting. Remember the sold-out shows in 2011 ?

Haha, what a funny comment:
“For 20 years, this guy would be borrowing things all the time,” Sting said, in a tone of mocking complaint. “Then I heard he was a songwriter.”

So, did Paul Simon also 'borrow' some songs from Sting?

yeah, thats really dark humour I know. :-)

@mog Hm, but in 2011 he already only played small places, didn't he?
I think the really regular fan base is melting since many many years. If you look at facebook, then Sting has 4.3 Million fans, Paul still only 660.000.

Dylan has 5.3 Mio
Leonard Cohen 1.8 Mio
Neil Diamond 800.000
Billy Joel 2 Mio
James Taylor 1.2 Mio
Mc Cartney 4.4 Mio
Willie Nelson 2.2 Mio

It's not that they or their fans aren't in the same age group...
Cohen was away for 10 years, he - IMO - was never had such a commercial success than Paul (Bridge, Graceland...), but today has 3 times more active(?) fans than Simon.

Paul Simon has never been specially interested in his "Fan base" and has not encouraged people to be "fans" of his. The lack of an often updated paulsimon.com is a typical example of this. Thus he receives the size of a the "fan base" he is entitled to.

That is absolute true Håkan, they/he did not care a lot about his fans, at least not the usual S&G up till ROTS fan - he created new albums in the past decade which most old fans did not care a lot about (I think beside the die hard fans).

Anyway, I am still surprised that Leonard Cohen is doin so much better, his latest 3 albums are standards, nice, good, charming and for the mass - but not outstanding and brilliant als Pauls songs (maybe thats the key).
But Cohen is touring a little bit more regular I think, and he visits more countries. Paul has only done extensive touring in UK and Ireland the last 8 years and forgot about the rest of the world.

Paul disappears from the world 5, 6 or 7 years at a time and then resurface to promote a new album with a short tour. Maybe he is more visible in the U.S., but I have for instance never seen him on Swedish National TV being interviewed about the new album. Sometimes he travels to London to promote an album in Europe, but that is about it.

It is no wonder that people tend to forget him.

I just cannot believe the recent comments about Paul not caring about his fans and disappearing from the world for 6 or 7 years at a time. Since 1999 to 2013 ,a total of 15 years he has toured in thirteen of these years. Three as S and G. Only exceptions were 2005 and 2010 (S and G tour cancelled} He performed in the US , Ireland. UK, Europe, Iceland, Scandinavia, Turkey,Israel, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia. Only three of these were to promote a new album. OK, not as many venues as in the Graceland ,BART, era's,but that is to be expected. He is 72 years old ! Still has a comparatively young family he enjoys spending time with. He shows his respect for his fans by producing brilliant albums and the giving of 100 per cent value by both him and his band in all his shows. Not to mention the time he spends on CHF Charity and many other benefit shows.

Maybe not too many Aussies clicked likes on his FB page but they sure turned up for and loved, his concerts last year and they sure were not small venues . All ages attended! That is what really matters.

Brenda I think there is a difference between actively not caring and passively not caring.

I agree, we are lucky as fans of Paul, he remains credible, he produces consistently good work and he has toured more in the last 15 years than at any time prior. I'm sure Paul is grateful to the fans and wants them to enjoy his shows and music.

However...

I think what people are saying is that Paul makes music on his own terms and, if the fans come, great! If not? It doesn't matter.

Rightly so as well. If I were Paul, I would prefer a small fanbase who listen to my music and like my music than a big fanbase that requires constant shouting at by my official websiter, Twitter, MTV, VEVO and my omnipresence on cheap chatshows worldwide being asked the same three questions: "Are you and Artie going to get back together?"; "What made you go to South Africa?"; "What comes first? The music or the lyrics?"

Paul isn't chasing fans anymore (if he ever did).

Well, the comments on this forum sure don't help getting a fanbase for Paul, it looks more like a gossip column with remarks like Paul has a new girlfriend and naked photos. If it was meant as humor it is very cheap humor. I really miss the appreciation here for Paul. All people can talk about here are the negative things which aren't even negative things but human things of a man who delivers great artistic work.

Thanks Matthew, I agree with what you said, I couldn't say it that way maybe... Paul himself does see him as and indie act today, so he did not "invest (time, music, energy)" into his fanbase anymore. I can live with that (but he himself seems to wonder about this fact a little bit, when he say's to Sting he has lost his fanbase) - I think it takes a lot of energy today to build up a big fan community.

Sorry Ans, but sometimes I have to disagree with you, this is one of those moments - and I am glad that I can talk freely.

Of course this was meant to be humour - and I really do not understand why you say that my comment is gossip - as - on the opposite - I myself thought that the big spread of these pictures all over the web is/was pure gossip and makes absolute no sense. So my comment was a zynical "What is that??" If you do a quick google search you find 100 pages with those pictures: "Paul and the lady xy sitting together", so I wondered what the hell is that, for what, who is she? Is this really interesting? The story has nothing, nothing happened there, just two stars sitting together (by accident??) - but the story was made up as if something really big was happening. So I asked if they are naked or if this is his new girlfriend - and I still do not get what it is about.

But - and I hope you do not mind - I think the writing on this forum has not changed in the last 10-12 years, we always had comments like that and made jokes like that, so I have a feeling your appreciation of them has either changed than my style of writing.
We never have been the group that only writes "Woaa I love it, woa great....uh wonderful, love, kiss kiss". That could work of course, but on the other hand thats boring after a few weeks.
