Yeah, I would agree with a score of 3.5 for YTO.

'Surprise' has its fans here. I just don't get sometimes the bashing against YTO.

They are very, very different records and we must thank Simon for not repeating the same s*it again and again.

I guess it refers to what appeals the most each of us in Simon's music, and it differs a lot in every individual. Simon is a full meal + vitamins when it comes to music variety.

Let's see now the SFTC review from this guy now...

Guys (& gals) this is most enjoyable thread we've had on this forum for a long time!! This is what being a Paul Simon fan is about. I find the songs that get the points up there with my favorites - I love cars are cars. Ace In The hole up loud esp from the live Philadelphia tower concert absolutely brilliant when Paul tells Richard tee to take it the keyboards. ROTS i didnt quite get straight after graceland until i heard the songs on CP 1991. Quiet well myself & Breda have discussed that on another thread - do any of you do yoga or mindfulness YTO is ideal accompaniment to those activities. Gun to my head album - had to be my first Paul Simon solo - hearts & bones. I'm going to sit down and listen to each album while reading the reviews.
Thanks again everyone !!

I agree Scaaty, this is a great thread, and congrats to Jim B, the Countdown Kid, for triggering it with his reviews. I followed his Dylan And Betales countdowns, and they lead to an honest debate and interesting support for fan preferences.

Going back to the ROTS review.
The Cool, Cool River got only 2 stars? Can't agree less. Think this is even my favourite from that album, along with The Coast. But I have to say, the live version is much better than the studio recording.

Who says: hard times?
I'm used to them
The speeding planet burns
I'm used to that
My life's so common it disappears
And sometimes even music
Cannot substitute for tears

I will just add my own stars to that album (and try to be in the same range from 2-5 stars...):

*****
The Coast
The Cool Cool River
****
Obvious child
Proof
Born at the right time
***
Spirit voices
She moves on
Can't run but
**
Further to Fly
Rhythm of the Saints

But I think I am realy influenced by the live versions, maybe I even listen to those songs more from the CP91 CD. The album is different.

I agree with Bodo the live versions of ROTS songs put them on a different plain! Unfortunately my CP91 CD has been overplayed and has more skips than a well loved vinyl - remember we were Told this couldn't happen to CDs - well they do - that was my 2nd CD bought at same time as 1st cd player (already had S&G collection given as a present )

Everything for me on ROTS is 4-5 stars.

'She Moves On': amazing track.

We are talking about Paul at his pinnacle here !

1.5 should be reserved for songs like Cars are Cars (which still some like!).

"Is there anyone here who truly enjoys "Once Upon A Time?" Well I do! Especially the last two verses which still give me goosebumps every time I listen to them (which is almost every day). Maybe it's because of my age that I relate to the Surprise album so much. Imo Paul's best work ever though YTO and SBOSW not far behind.

Whats interesting: The more often we talked about Cars are Cars in the last few years the more I like that song.
It really has some parts which are very pleasing, i like the bridge (I once had a car..that was more like a home..)
But maybe I just like that because the rest is so nerving? I can't wait until he sings that part...

All songs on ROTS are great.

Once upon a time - should be poetry the lyrics are amazing - so much of life is summed up in that song both good times & bad - yes Brenda I think it may be age related (apologies for leaving out the n earlier!!)

BTw listening to hearts & bones at the moment - himself is insisting on singing 'f..... (rhymes with heart) and scones' is this grounds for divorce??
