I think that is somehow too simplified. How can you blame Mike Nichols for the break up, just because Paul was not in the movie.

| i do remember Paul saying in a tv interview with Jane Pauley{Mike Nicholls wife }that Mike was to blame for him not getting an Oscar for Mrs Robinson. he then said he was only joking he forgot to do the paperwork. |
