 | I heard that the Hearts & Bones album was supposed to be a S&G album at one point. Does anybody know whether any songs for the Heart and Bones album were recorded/demo\´ed with Art?

 | Hearts & Bones demo's rescued from the cutting room floor, sometimes bootlegged as 'Art & Bones'... some pf these tracks feature Art, and there are alternate cuts of other tracks - none is quite the same as the LP version...

 | The only thing I know is the following. During their tour in 1983 in the U.S. you can already hear some numbers Simon and Garfunkel prepaired in order to bring out on a new album, on which they were working during their touring time.
But as always they could not get along with each other: in Paul`s opinion Art was too slow in his contribution the their new album called: "Think too Much". Paul went so angry that he erased the voice of Art Garfunkel and brought out his new album "Hearts and Bones: of course the numbers on "Think too Much" sung by Art Garfunkel were not put up in this new album and Art`s voice is not to be heard on the Heart and Bones album.
There are a few links to this concept-album and I`ll give you one from which I know you are allowed to hear the four parts:

By the way: on this album also the composition of "Citizens of the Planet" is to be heard as the last song. But for their fans this version was brought out as a bonus track on the "Old Friends" album. Strange but really true to my opinion, but whom am I.......I hope you will enjoy the music! |

  | I have never heard of that "Art was too slow" story.
In fact they had their problems and fights.
Paul said that many of the H&B songs he wrote are very personal, they are about his psyciatric problems (Allergies, Think too much) or about his relationships (H&B, Train in the distance,...)
Paul and Art never have spend any time in the studio together during that time, Paul wrote a song, recorded it with his voice, then Art went into another studio and recorded his own voice over Pauls singin and send the tape back to Paul. In the end Paul felt that these are not his songs anymore. He said he felt like a painter and someone else is comming and paints over his work. It did not feel right.

  | In Their Own Words. Excerpt from the 1991 Stuart Grundy BBC Seven Part "Paul Simon Songwriter " radio series in which Paul and Art discuss the difficulties they encountered during the making of the original Hearts and Bones Album. Paul is very practical and honest while Art is very emotional . There is more discussion after the song.

 | Thank you su much Brenda for bringing up the truth about this fenomenal. I was just searching to put addiotinal info regarding this subject and I`ll put up the links to the four parts of "Think too much".
These two adult men were during the decades too diffenrent in the way they like the kind of music, but in fact the differences between them were already visible during their finish of BOTW in 1970. |

I had this germ in my possession during a long time. But it has also been put up on:
http://www.simonandgarfunkelmessageboard.com/post/ Think-Too-Much-(Unreleased-Album-1983)-Simon-and-G arfunkel-6028385?trail=50#6: the link to this album have been erased, but for people who like to see the comments there about this post I give it on this forum.
The list of the finally Hearts and Bonus (I know most of you do know this; so please do not comment. Some new people who are coming to look at what is happening on this forum, may not know so much as other members do ;):
1. "Allergies" – 4:37
2. "Hearts and Bones" – 5:37
3. "When Numbers Get Serious" – 3:25
4. "Think Too Much" (b) – 2:44
5. "Song About the Moon" – 4:07
6. "Think Too Much" (a) – 3:05
7. "Train in the Distance" – 5:11
8. "René and Georgette Magritte with their Dog after the War" – 3:44
9. "Cars are Cars" – 3:15
10. "The Late Great Johnny Ace" (Simon, Glass) – 4:45
My last words: this must have been a tragedy for the both man. I knew that Art did not like the album the way Paul made it and - due to Brenda - we now kno exactly why Art was very unhappy with it. And just as we now know that this album was for Paul a very personal album.
"That`s all I have to tell you; that`s all I have to say".
By the way: about nr. 13 "Citizen of the planet". When I listen to this on this unfinished album it seems to me this songs has already been finished in 1983! |

 | @Brenda: thanks so much for the link to the mp3 interview! Paul explains, where Bodo already referred to, that for instance Train in the Distance is almost autobiographical, the song contains a list of facts belonging to the personal life of Paul and not Art. And it is clear that Paul and Art disagreed on the harmonies that should go with the songs. Art claims that the record could have been a very big hit if it were brought out under S&G instead of solo. I really like the record very much, but I doubt if what Art claimed would have been so in reality. The nature of the songs is not S&G like, IMHO. |

 | Hi Michiel,
You write here "what Art claimed" you can also read in the following way. In fact he admitted later that he felt "This is not a S & G Album, but a Paul Simon album" I only have the need to give the following info. Paul went indeed to a psychiatrist, but Art also had one of his worst times in his entire life. I do not give any details, although I know them from Paul and Art as well. End conclusion: both men were mentally in a bad shape and could not get along with each other. They did not speak to each other for ten years. Sad, but true??
Michiel would you be please so kind to take you words back regarding that I was wrong? Bodo and I were both right in this case: I would be very gratful to you if you will do this for me. This was also the reason for me not to place a reaction on what Bodo wrote down regarding Paul and Art. I`m
going back to my bed: I have a terrible headache: and just keep on singing Michiel if you like it. The lanscape in your song "Emily" was wonderful to me: I think you really love nature just as I do. |

 | I seem to remember Paul told Rolling Stone Magazine in 1983 that he was frustrated over the fact that the S&G album "Think too Much" took longer time to make than what was planned and that Art was slow in recording his part. |

  | Agree Michiel. Most of Hearts and Bones is definitely not S and G material. I believe Paul had already written some of the songs before agreeing to a joint album. Think Art might have overestimated when saying his harmonies would have added nearly 15 million to the sales. It is one of my favourite PS albums! |

 | This S&G idea album was a bad one. It did not make sense. Both of them had had complete control on their work for more than a decade at that point.
The album would have been probably a success because of the label '1st S&G original album in 13 years' on it and the S&G household name, but it would have probably gotten mixed reviews, if not really bad ones. This album would have become an abundant pawn-shop item around the world.
Let's face it: this idea came about because their 1981 reunion was a huge success and that because both of their careers were in a low period. Paul was missing the spotlight and was still digesting with difficulties the flop of OTP.
Glad that they are leaving us with BOTW and not H&B. |
