Hi folks,

Quick question for the most experienced fans around the globe: how do you see Paul live in 2011? Do you think he was at its best in terms of live concerts? Pinnacle of career ?

IMHO, BART tour was the pinnacle, culminating in CIP 91. I think it´s rare that an artist can point to a moment, a night, and say ´that´s as good as it gets´, but CIP 91 may have been it, coming off the incredible creative streak of Graceland and ROTS.

The YTO tour, Surprise, and SBOSW were great - and he´s never far off from his best - but not quite the inredible 17 (?) piece band of BART.

I understand what you mean about the "Born At The Right Time Tour," but in my opinion the current tour is better because Paul is really playing a lot of guitar. I thought on the "Born At The Right Time Tour" he relied on his band to cover the guitar parts more than he does now. Yes, he´s lost a bit off his upper range, but ok - he *is* 20 years older. My personal favorite tour was the ´73-´74 tour but I wouldn´t try to argue that it was his best since many of his best songs were not yet written.

Basically it is the same band since around 12 years. Because Mark is the instrumental band leader.
Anyway, the band is smaller now than in the time between 1999 and 2002, so they sounded a little bit better in that time, while now it is some kind of improvisation (drums during obvious child, no horns section... - it´s nice and good made, but you know it could be better)

Definately the 1991 tour was his biggest and most people saw him in that time (I do not think there was any concert with an audience less than 10.000). I agree with Roy, he did not play a lot of guitar and relied most on the excellent band (Including people like Michael Brecker). I enjoy small concerts more because they have a more intimate feeling. But somehow it is strange that Paul Simon can not fill a small arena with let´s say 5000 people anylonger.

Of course, BATRT was the most sucessful and wide tour, but I guess it was pretty much the same concert from A to Z each night. At the time, no internet to share fans thoughts on concerts, so no need to change set list from time to time.

Since, I feel that the 2011 tour was more special. More hapiness on stage, starting from Paul himself; more changes in set list, more nuances every night; better chemistry on stage. A few deep cuts as well, covers, etc.

Well, the 2011 tour was the first one with more changes in the setlist, thats something completely new to Paul Simon. (but I would not overestimate it...in general he played the usual set and had around 4-5 variations of songs. And he has put YCCMA on the setlist again and was surprised people liked it so much :-)

Also in 1991 he changed the setlist from time to time, but only for the encores.

I really liked the One Trick Pony tour - a small band, Paul fully engaged in every song, and his guitar work was central to everything. Plus we had none of that very odd thing he does with his hands these days and the way he does a full bow after every song. I agree with the previous posters that an earlier tour has the disadvantage that a lot of fantastic material hadn´t yet been written, but that really was a great tour, and Paul was very animated the night I caught him in London.

For me the Graceland tour has to be the best, It was my first Paul Simon solo concert - I entered as a fan and came out as a fanatic!!
BART comes a close second.
Vicar street (2011) was aslo special, as it was such an intimate venue.

What odd things is he doin with his hands?

I guess you see more gestures than I, on the YTO tour he made a few during songs like ´The Teacher´ but last summer I did not see any gestures.

The only hand gestures that stood out to me were during "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" when he made some joking gestures and during "That Was Your Mother" when he did an air accordion and air washboard gesture. I thought those were all fun and entertaining!
