Simon and Marsalis in Rare Collaboration
By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.
The New York Times, January 24, 2012.

Paul Simon and Wynton Marsalis will give three concerts together in April, performing Mr. Simon`s songs in a rare collaboration between one of the leading pop song writers of the last 50 years and the virtuoso jazz trumpet player, Jazz at Lincoln Center announced Tuesday. The concerts will be staged at the Rose Theater at the organization`s headquarters on Columbus Circle.

The first will be at a gala on April 18 to honor Lisa Schiff for her leadership as chairwoman of the Jazz at Lincoln Center board. Two more concerts will be given for the general public on April 19 and 20. Entitled `The Paul Simon Songbook, the performances will cover songs from Mr. Simon`s entire career, arranged by Mr. Marsalis and other members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Mr. Simon and Mr. Marsalis have worked together twice, but they have never performed a full-length concert with each other. Mr. Simon will bring his own sidemen, and Aaron Neville will join the ensemble on some songs.

Thanks for the link Ans. Sure to be a great performance. Looks like 2012 will be as good a year for Paul´s music as 2011!

Trumpets and similar instruments are great, better than strings in pop music. See "Oh Marion", "Late In The Evening" etc.

Maybe Paul should use them more often on his next studio album(s).

Having the orchestra opens a new world of options for Paul and I hope he is adventurous - you would assume that a lot of 70s stuff will get in there - Still Crazy, Something So Right, American Tune but there are options for later stuff as well. Some Capeman songs would work well and I can imagine Can´t Run But and Cool Cool River sounding really nice with that wall of sound.

I really hope/believe that they will play some unusual songs. Nothing against Still crazy or so, but when a jazz musicians re-aranges the setlist he hopefully brings up things like Jonah, I Do It For Your Love, Oh Marion, How the heart approaches..., well, maybe just 1 of them :-)

Well...but nothing official ever appeared from the spring 2008 Paul Simon celebration shows. So I guess you have to be there.
