Paul Simon`s Grammy-winning album Graceland ` an irresistible and groundbreaking fusion of American and South African pop music ` was an immediate hit when it was released in 1986. It also proved to be a lightning rod for controversy, after South African leaders protested that Simon had broken the cultural boycott of the nation`s oppressively racist apartheid regime. In the documentary Under African Skies, premiering on Sunday at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Simon returns to South Africa ` which formally ended apartheid in 1994 ` 25 years after Graceland`s release. Director Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills) follows Simon as he reunites with his South African collaborators, and revisits the controversy the album caused, while luminaries like Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, and Paul McCartney share their thoughts on what the album meant to them.

I wonder if they explore the whole Los Lobos thing in this doc

can´t imagine. there was never anything substantiated beyond the rants of Steve (?) Berlin. Simon is very collaborative in how he works but also very exacting when it comes to credits. The doc will probably give LL another opportunity to dredge it up.

I think that whole Los Lobos thing is already finished and Paul has nothing more to add.
He explained it a few times and he explained it very well - and what he said is also true I think: The band never thought that they will sue Paul, this was all the idea of some advocates. And they never sued Paul, simply because there was no chance to win that thing. Zero. I think that was very clear all time and that made Paul even more angry about it. And 15 years later this guy from Los Lobos was still running around and telling that story - why did they never bring it to any court if it would have any substance? They have enough money today to hire an expensive advocate.

This band has been booked as session musicians and got paid per hour. That was the deal and it was never a collaboration - maybe it was their fault to sign such a contract. And now let´s face reality: The song All Around The World is the least important one on that album and did not add a lot of substance to the album or influenced people to buy it. It was You Can Call Me Al, Graceland, Diamonds, Boy in the Bubble, Under African Skies...those are the major songs. To get out more money for a 2nd class song which never got any attention is a little bit strange. Normaly you only do that if the song becomes a hit/single.

I am pretty sure they will not talk about Los Lobos in that documentary. The album could have been released without that song.

Who cares about Los Lobos...

No doubt this documentary will be released on DVD one day?

A DVD release is mandatory, I´d say.
By the way, I thought Graceland was released in August 1986 - so even though I really suck at maths - that would make it its 26th anniversary this year, wouldn´t it?
