After all his years of Napoleonic acting up... Every now & again someone mentions that Paul Simon is not a very pleasant person but there is very little evidence to show he was any worse or even as bad as any other big performer. He may have had a big ego in his earlier days but he´d more right to that than many.

Without a strong will you can´t survive in the music business. (Yes, I listened to the OTP interview;-))

IMO there is nothing wrong with a strong ego, it is part of your identity, you just have to use is wisely.

Paul is doing just fine without a Grammy, these are for commercial music on the radio. I read this article and this sentence says it right about Paul´s music:

"This is popular music, but with a depth and mastery far beyond anything you`ll hear on commercial radio."

I think the Napoleonic, difficult reputation is strictly tied to production and performance perfection (let´s face it, he is a perfectionist).

An article, from BART tour, Gadd talked about what a regular guy Paul is: hangs out, watches ball games, just all around decent. Not distant and remote like many big names.

With so many years in this exremely competitive business, it would be very surprising if there were not some people who don´t like you.

Some people are extremely nerved, when somebody takes a lot of time to make something "right". Others just don´t like you, when you are succesful. And if you don´t say "no" from time to time, you don´t get Old in the business. It would be very unusual, if someone only has good friends after so many years in music.

Indeed, Mimi! Just remember his law suit with Columbia (Walter Yetnikoff) which led to the character of the record boss in OTP after signing with Warners. He paid 1,5 Million Dollars to Columbia to release him from recording another album. He had offered to sing songs from other writers, Columbia refused, finally Greatest Hits, Etc. was the last album and he got ownership of all his Solo-work including "Songbook".---

A more pleasant story is when he told that "Mrs. Robinson" was not nominated for an Oscar as best film music since he forgot to fill out a form first. It would have had at least great chances if not a sure winner.

If uncivil behavior could disqualify someone from the Grammy awards, surely Kanye West would have been banned. I think he apologized later, but my goodness, what was he thinking?

Wow, I´m surprised it wasn´t nominated. I wish there weren´t so many complete idiots in the music business like Kanye West. But it´s what the kids are into, and "the album of the year" is supposed to be the album that best defines the music of that year. While the quality of Paul Simon´s album rises well above the shock factor of Lady Gaga he´s not exactly the most popular artist right now.

On a kind of related note, maybe some of you see this the way I do. The main reason I don´t like artists like Lady Gaga and Kanye West is because it seems like their whole persona and everything about them is just a big act. Nothing against that if that´s what someone likes, but I prefer a more natural and personal style in music.

Seems to me that was passes as musical artistic talent is often just the camoflage to hide the lack of any real talent or genuine creativity.

I good example of that would have to be the latest 14 minute music video from Lady Gaga - the music kicks in after about 8 minutes, the rest should have just stayed in the mental asylum and not allowed to see the light of day.

I guess they think they are being clever - just another version of The Emporers New Clothes

Maybe now she´s won afew Grammies lady gaga might be able to buy afew clothes and not have to perform in her underwear!
Now there´s a thought could you imagine Simon & garfunkel doing that in their younger days;)?

The problem for me is, that it looks like there is no room left for "real" musicians. You always had the groups, that the kids liked and they were always sort of constructed for the musical taste of the teenies, but nowadays few people grow out of that phase.

And the grammies were always the place, where there was room for real music. There are enough awards that cover the best-selling artists space.

Nowadays selling music is all about looks, clothes (or lack of them) and scandals and there are very few musicians that are succesfull just with their music (Adele is a big exception this year). And I think that Lady Gaga does have musical talent, but she is so concerned about beeing succesful and the biggest star on earth, that there is no room left for creative music.

I think the Outrageous costumes are just part of the packaging. Female singers especially are judged on appearance, and Lady without makeup and high heels is petite and doesn´t have a striking or classically beutiful appearance. I think she is a tough, scrappy New Yorker and a skilled performer who is quite determined to be more than a flash in the pan now that she has our attention.

It´s great that Adele is doing so well - by performance alone. Another great singer is R&b singer Imelda may. We´re going to her concert next weekend.
