According to The Second Disc, the Graceland CD is newly remastered for this release - perhaps in preparation for the Graceland box set next year - although the tracklist is the same as the previous Warner Bros. release. The songs on the Songwriter CD are also newly remastered. http://theseconddisc.com/2011/10/19/reminder-next-

I have the Songwriter CD pre-ordered but I don´t think I´ll bother with this "new" Graceland CD. Not when this remaster is sure to be a part of any boxset they release next year.

I wonder how many times they can remaster something ? LOL !!!

It was all released in 2004. This is not news.

Soon, they will try to sell us a remaster of SBOSW.

I´m working on my remasters, that´s right
Gonna change the fading
Throw away the Old tapes
Toss them in the trash
Every minute after midnight
All the time I´m spending
Is just for workin´on my remasters
Gonna turn it into cash

Some of these "re-masters" must qualify for a breach of the Trades Descriptions Act.

well, on the other hand, its better than if they all went out of print, and you could not find a copy, maybe that´s not a concern in this digital age, but in the Old days, records and books went out of print and if you original was lost or damaged you were out of luck (oh my gosh, I´m a dinosaur).

Anyway, Paul makes money when old songs are in commercials, when they are in movies, when other people record them. Who cares, so what?

The good thing for fans now is he is active, playing and recording, hopefully a concert dvd or record, and more new music to come. If you have already purchased at least 3 versions of all previous albums, you are off the hook for these new reissues, don´t feel too bad

You are so right to focus on the good stuff that Paul does. So great he is still active, enjoys life and his music career.

I am looking forward to hear the music of his fall tour on youtube, maybe a nice bootleg and hopefully a live concert DVD. And next year the Graceland tour with his Old Friends.

These are a couple of comments about the 2004 remaster on Amazon...

Maybe somebody at Sony agrees with them? Maybe Paul wasn´t happy with them or even they took notice of the reviews?

"When this album was originally released it very quickly became a classic. The fusion of African tribal and Western soft rock music works, and works well.

Unfortunately - and these comments apply solely to this remaster - the sound quality has suffered as a result of the current arms race between record labels to make their CDs as loud as possible. Whereas on the original CD release the opening track "The Boy In The Bubble" began with a soft accordian solo followed by a series of drum hits that sounded like firecrackers (and scared the life out of anyone that wasn´t expecting it), here all the dynamics of this are lost in a muddy compressed version of what was once a great album.

Many other classic albums have been destroyed like this by record labels. Do yourself a favour and track down the original 1986 CD of this album on Marketplace.

For the record the original 1986 version of this is unquestionably a 5-star album."

"As I listened to this re-mastered version of Paul Simon´s classic `Graceland´ CD I wondered how much better it would be than the original. It wasn´t. Indeed it wasn´t as good. Haunting softness and melodious depth had been usurped by what seemed crisper and louder - but the original was heard via the heart as well as the ear. The re-mastered version is still a great CD but it somehow lacks soul. Hence the drop from 5 to 4-star rating."

Idk... All I have is the Graceland 2004 remaster so I can´t say which is better, but I do have both versions of ROTS and I think the remaster sounds much better than the original.

The ROTS LP and CD (first version 1991) even sound very different. Also den Graceland LP and first CD (there I prefered the LP version...but I do not have a player now)
