 | Steve jobs finally succumbed to cancer yesterday Wednesday founder of apple and inventor of the iPod . I know there are many who do not approve of this technology but for me the iPod opened up the whole way I listened to music from having one cd/ tape in the car listening to it over & over again. I now have extended my range discover the earlier PS works and also other musicians and genres.
For that I am ever grateful may he rest in peace

 | I can´t imagine life now without my iPad and iPad (and the iPhone I want). He died much too soon - he changed the way we live our lives. Too bad we won´t find out what else he could have done given more years. At least he lived long enough to see the success of his life´s work. |

 | Well - I should not say any bad things now so close to his tragic death, but I live very comfortable without any of those i-things... I would sum it up in saying that all the apple-followers paid a lot for marketing, design and strategy focused on one person. To buy a iPhone 1, iPhone 2, iPhone 3, iPhone4 a.s.o.is not the essence of life and also did not change peoples life. Hearing that sentence makes me nervous. If you think on a broader scale it did not change anyones life cause you can throw it away and life very good. But it made you believe that the consumerism makes happy AND is even helpfull to the society. The point is that this is not true, iPod does not help mankind to improve. It does not even change your private life, you would just have used another MP3 player instead. I for myself always think that those apple-followers who think about Steve Jobs as their Messiah and buy all that stuff on pre-order without even thinking a minute about it´s benefit are the worst outcome of the consumption society today. Pause.
Things who changed peoples life are medicine against HIV, cancer or other diseases, tools to clean water or to increase yield, well even the computer was a helpfull invention. But I do not see Steve Jobs in that category, 90% of his invention was marketing strategy, corporate design and to build up a desire on those things which are geek-items - cause you do not need them in this world to survive. And in the 3th world those items would be something you would change for a bowl of rice.
Sorry if this posting sounds rude now, it is nothing personal against anyone of you. It is just my thoughts about Mr. Jobs and the big feedback to his early and sad death and sentences like: ´he changed my life´ which are repeated a lot now.
You might ask yourself: What will be left over in 10 or 20 years? iPhone, iPad, iTunes, iMac...? I don´t think so, something better will come as usually in a few months.
And I do not think anyone of you would have liked Steve Jobs in person - he was a despot at work, hungry for power and not the boss you would like to meet in the elevator.
Steve Jobs was the Messiah of the consumption society. |

 | I can only agree with much of what you are saying Bodo, Apple is/was the ultimate victory of style over substance.
iPods look nice, they are easy to use and very fashionable but if you compare the sound quality with almost any other mp3 player then the iPod comes out worst. Surely with an item that´s only purpose is to play music the sound quality would be the first thing you look for? It´s proven not to be the case.
Look at the iPhone - I have people telling me they´d much rather have the single-tasking processes of the iphone and ipad, the limits of the specially designed apps because they are easy to use. People would actually rather have less functionality to provide more ease of use. This is crazy to me but it seems we get more dumbed down and more lazy as time goes on.
If people can´t pick something up and just know how to use it straight away then people can´t be bothered to learn and assume it´s a piece of junk.
Sad times really.
Steve Jobs was a genius in the sphere of marketing, in creating that cult of personality and in doing so making a hell of a lot of money. The real genius of the piece though is that he persuaded the Apple followers he was a messiah for other reasons, because he gave them the chance to spend hundreds and thousands of their hard earned dollars/euros/pounds on limited, Apple badged kit that underwent minute revisions every year. A very clever man.
I dislike Apple the most though due to them being anti-convergence. Technology will really hit another level when everything is compatible with everything else but that is completely against what Apple want and therefore you either sign up to apple products for life - for better for worse, you accept their ways or you avoid Apple altogether, like I do. |

 | I have been an Apple Mac user since the early nineties and I have to disagree with the style over substance remark as well as other statements above.
It is interesting that Bodo should choose advances in knowledge in HIV and medicine as being real life changing events - he is absolutely correct! but there is a link -
In the early nineties laboratory instrumentation became so sophisticated that they required stand alone PCs to be operated and to analyse the data they acquired. the graphics and intuitive controls of Macs were ideal for this. Biologists didnt want to have to "control alt del" etc before they started getting the more important information they required. Unfortunately when Steve Job left Apple the business went down hill and manufacturers of these instruments then had to turn to Windows based PCs - which were never as efficient. However to this day many biologists and medics still prefer Macs as they are "easier" ie more intuitive to use and have a "friendlier" aspect about them. I think we would all prefer that they concentrate on finding the cure to cancer etc that trying to figure out where their files have been stored on the complicated Windows system!!
iPads are now becoming requisite for hospital doctors so that they can immediately have access to diagnostic images for their patients
I agree with the constant updates being a frustrating feature of Macs - however PCs were still using floppys when apples had converted completely to CD/dvd/USB keys and we all know how more robust they are.
Style as well as substance - I am presently using a 2004 Power Lap top with OS x.4 which is equivalent to Windows 2008. My first generation iPod is still going strong.
Steve Job not a very pleasant person - neither was our own Paul Simon in the 60s 70s 80s - age mellows people Steve Jobs wont get that chance. geniuses are rarely perfect in other aspects of life. there is also a very low turnover of Apple employees so he must have been doing something right.
Just marketing genius - out of my sphere but I heard some "expert" say that Apple could have just rested on its laurels and keep making the same successful items and not bother with further developments which are expensive and time consuming but that Jobs was always pushing the boundries!
Finally - anti convergence. macs now have dual operating systems so if you need to use windows it is now possible. Microsoft Office works well on Macs and many Mac users can navigate more efficiently around than their Windows colleagues
Sorry for being so long winded, Apple products not only improved the quality and quantity of my music collection but were also important in the production of my MSc and PhD which I hope contributed in some small way to "life changing" events in the progress of mankind.
Thank you for reading.

 | Interesting reading. As on most products there are good things and bad things. I remember how happy I was that I could see Paul live at the iTunes festival on my notebook :)
I like my Ipod and my iTunes library but I also use windows media player and their library. I can buy music from iTunes but not from Amazon. Steve Jobs is no God for me but he made life easier for a lot of people.

 | Sorry for a maybe stupid question: Why you can´t buy music from amazon?
I really dislike buying from iTunes, because I have to download and install all their software just to get that one song (and later delete everyhting again)
I bought Biko from some webstore...can not remember the name now, but it was really simple...3 clicks, voila.
So I do not see the advantages from iTunes, except that it binds the customer to some company. |

 | Amazon mp3´s are not available to buy in our country. For several years now I get this message when I try to buy an mp3 song in a amazon store.
`Amazon.co.uk is currently only available to UK customers. US customers should visit Amazon.com`s MP3 site, German, Austrian and Swiss customers should visit Amazon.de`s MP3 site and French customers should visit Amazon.fr`s MP3 site. This is due to our publishing and licensing agreements with our digital music partners. We continue to work towards making the service available in other countries.â?
I heard somewhere that when you buy mp3´s or music from iTunes you don´t buy the songs but only the legal right to play them.

 | iPhone 4s
=========
Well, when it was revealed that there is no new iPhone 5, only a iPhone 4s there was a big moaning all around. Now - with the death of Mr. Jobs - people start to buy this thing just because of one argument: Messiah is death. Like they bought Amy Winehouse CD´s 2 months ago...
It has absolute nothing to do with the product - fans themself said before it is crap. Now they buy. :-)
