And you call yourselves Paul Simon fans...

Well, if you ever get to meet the man, you can tell him that his personal selection is crap because it doesn´t fit your particular personal preference.

David from UK says :

Yup, if I ever meet the man I´ll tell him that his personal selection is disappointing because there is insufficient variety from the plethora of other compilations out there.

It never occured to me that as a fan I wasn´t entitled to an opinion...hey i´m a liberal, but to a degree(as the man said).

"Chosen completely at fucking random" would be a cool compilation name.

well, I have heard that "Greatest Hits, Etc." was supposed to be called Blatant Greatest Hits. I think this is when Paul was under the spell of the Saturday Night Live crowd, and thought it was important to be kind of mocking and ironic about everything, but cooler heads prevailed and a less insulting name was chosen.

I recall a local (Rochester ny) radio station playing a new song (slip sliding, or stranded in a limo) "from the upcoming Blatant Greatest Hits".

Everyone is entitled to have an opinion but why make it so personal?

I look at this compilation as an album to promote the fall tour. An opportunity for people who are getting interested in Paul´s music through his latest album to discover Paul´s earlier music. If you don´t like the choices, get over it and make your own compilation album with your favourite songs, you can even make your own title :)

I like his choices and can see why Paul choose these songs. This doesn´t mean that I buy the album, I already have these songs.

Everyone who wants to buy the album, feel free and enjoy the beautiful music!

I would welcome a _LIVE_ CD to promote any little fall tour... Last live CD is exactly 20 years Old now (CP 1991). The only other release of a Paul Simon live performance in concert was You´re the one DVD...and some small appearances on Gershwin DVD.

There is really no balance now between releases with real new material (studio + live) and compilations of old songs.

Interestingly we should get the feeling that those new compilations are only for ´new´ fans, but there is one question left: Why is there 1 new live song and 1 cover version by Aretha Franklin on it? It simply looks as if thats the food for the old fans...

BTW: (I know thats no option for most of you) When I nught the new Roxette CD this year I took the ´deluxe´ edition. It was the same price range as the Paul Simon deluxe edition of SBOSW. It also included 2 CD´s, the album, and all Old hit´s from a recent live concert on CD 2.
That was deluxe. That was for new fans (they get all the old hit´s) AND it was for old fans cause they get a new live CD.

Anyway, I first didn´t think we will dicuss this compilation a lot :-) - Most other compilations in the last years didn´t get much feedback from us and got ignored I think. I only bought one - shining like a national guitar - and gave it as a gift to a non paul simon fan. She liked it a lot.

I honestly don´t think it´s Paul Simons personal collection fir instance where is " Bernadette" which Paul had said was his best song since grAceland? I think it´s just a gimic to make all fans buy it Old & new - and that is what I find annoying. But there are a lot of compilations one after every new studio album each time I try to resist buying them maybe this I´ll succeed :)

"where is ´Bernadette´ which Paul had said was his best song since grAceland?"

If you followed what Paul said over the years, you end up being contradicted. He always says things like "the best album in 20 years" or "one of the best songs I´ve ever written". The five years later he releases another album and suddenly the previous album/song is not mentioned at all by him.

I would also welcome a Live CD but Live CD´s don´t sell well. Most people find the applause annoying. I agree it is a marketing product for new and Old fans. But everyone is free to buy it or not. At the beginning I bought everything, expensive DVD´s only for Paul´s performance but I also traded bootlegs and bought some CD´s on Ebay. It was great fun to build my PS collection. I am more relaxed now and can resist buying this songwriter collection and wait for a DVD release of this tour :)

Scaaty, I also missed Bernadette but in an interview Paul mentioned he left out some good ones, maybe for a Songwriter collection Vol. II ;-)

Wasn´t there a live CD of the You´re The One Paris concert released? I seem to remember it in a double pack with the DVD but it was a very badly edited version and squeezed onto 1 CD

Yeah, I read it might be the worst CD ever released by Paul Simon. They even faded out some songs before the end... not sure if they got Paul´s amen. A 2nd CD would have cost another 5 Cent or so I guess :-
