 | Just my 2 Cents:
a) I think that it was clearly Pauls decission to play smaller venues and also ´normal´ arenas/theaters. But: It always depends on what the concert promoter offers to you - and THEY (not Paul) have to calculate how many people will come. It is clear that Paul can not fill a stadion of 30.000 people in let´s say Miami. But he could in NY, and he could in Israel. In Dublin a very small company with a mini-club got the show (and filled it without any advertisement, there was not even one poster in the city, while I saw some for Neil Diamond and even Ladysmith Black Mambazo), while I am sure that other promoters offered him a bigger venue in the same city. So I think that whenever they got the chance to play a small venue, they decided to do that show. They never think ´Can I fill that arena´ because that is the business of the local promoter. A local promoter offering a stadion for 80.000 people to Paul Simon must be an idiot.
b) You now guess that because of 1 new date this next tour will be in bigger arenas. Why? Also in spring Paul played small and big venues - and often in the same city.

 | Beside Paul Simon not knowing that the Capeman will be a flop no one else on this planet knew it.
Musicals are a hit because everyone knows their title. My experience as a tourist on Broadway and in London is - Whenever I wanted to visit a musical (and I do not know a lot about them), I have to decide which title sounds good to me: ´Hair´, ´We will rock you´, ´Grease´, ´The Lion King´, ´Spider man´, ´Sister act´, ´The Capeman´, ´Facebook´, ´Mc Donalds´, ´Bill Gates story´, ´Two and a half men´, ´The Rolling Stones´, ´Lady Gaga´ - Which one would you visit if you only know the title?
I am sure a mediocre musical named ´Simon and Garfunkel´ would be a 30-year long sold out runner on broadway. I am pretty sure Paul has been offered to do that. If not, I want my 1% for that idea....

 | and to continue briefly, to make an equivalency between The Capeman (Paul´s one foray into Broadway playwriting et al), and his multi decade success as a pop music artist is either intellectually dishonest or just lacking any insight. anyway, i´ll be moving on now, cheers. | | | Ans

 | Just enjoy the music and be grateful that Paul still makes great music and wants to go on tour. If you have a chance to see him live just go and enjoy so you won´t regret it later....

 | Being that Paul is a huge Yankees fan (and so am I, though I also Love the Red Sox & Mets), it´ll be interesting to see if he books any dates during the World Series games when the Yankees could have home games...
The World Series dates are from Oct. 19-27, with the American League team´s home games (that would, potentially, be the Yankees) on Oct 22, 23 & 24. My bet is that there will be no concerts on those dates. The other games are on 19, 20, 26 & 27- those are at the National League teams home stadium...To be honest I´m kind of surprised that he´s playing a date on the 20th...but it is on the west coast & barring a massive upset those games on 19, 20, 26 & 27 are all going to be in Philly...so his show on the west coast would be done in time to watch the world series...
Curious to see how many other shows he plays, and where & when...come on east coast dates!!! | | | linclink

Well, the recent announcement of the fall tour (and the respective venues) makes you look like a pretty big idiot now, eh Bodo? No need for your rebel-without-a-cause contrarianism anymore, methinks. | | | Mimi

 | Personally I don´t think there is any question at all, at least not in my mind, that Paul was playing smaller venues earlier this year because he enjoyed the club gigs, and he wanted to give something really special back to his fans.
This was especially evident because he´d play more than one night in smaller halls, and/or clubs in larger cities & sell both dates out quickly & easily.
Paul McCartney did this in 2010 when he played hockey & basketball arenas multiple nights in certain cities rather than playing the football & baseball stadiums that he played in ´09 & ´11.
I think he´s going back out because...he truly enjoyed playing the gigs that he played in the Spring, and to give a greater number of folks a shot at seeing him.
My bet is that Paul will be selling out the 5,000-10,000 seat halls again this fall, and that he could quite probably sell out larger venues than he´s choosing to play now even. | | | Cher

 | And I imagine there will be those special card holders getting the best seats again and selling them for a fortune. | | | Forum guest

 | actually, looking at this list, it looks like he is playing venues based on his ability to sell tickets in each market, not, not larger and not smaller. I don´t think there is anything wrong with that, but it does seem to be what he is doing. Obviously, when he plays clubs, that is just because he enjoys it, and knows the fans do too.
I can´t imagine why anyone would think it is a problem or to suggest that Paul, or his promoters, choose venues based on some projection of ticket sales.
I also cannot imagine why anyone would use the word "methinks"

 | out of interest, I went to ticketmaster and tried to get one ticket to the Berkeley show. - the best available for normal ticks came back pretty far back, just before the lawn.
However, there was a "silver ticket" available in the 7th row, seat 5, sounds near the middle, for 275 bucks.
So, Cher, it is not only the scalpers who are driving up the cost of the good seats, obviously a bunch are reserved for these so called "package" deals.
Still, I´d rather have this great seat for 275 than be way back for 75. | | | |
