I do not understand everything. What is the quintessence?

Sounds like the lady interviewing wanted him to say that PS stole the song. I like his answer.

Well, maybe the description of many PS songs is like that:

Lyrics: Paul Simon
Melody: Paul Simon
Arrangement: Paul Simon
Production: Paul Simon (and Roy?)
music style: Someone else

The question is for example: How much of the music of Mother And Child Reunion has been written by Paul Simon... he wanted a ska song, and they made it reggae. But when Paul shows us how he wanted it to sound as a ska song (think thats the Born At The Right Time documentation), then you hear exactly that all the ideas, chords, rhytm came from him .

So how many percent of the whole song are by Ray Phiri? Or was it just a guitar riff? Bakithi wrote the famous bass solo for YCCMA, but we know Paul wanted it to be played backwards then. And he has been paid for that as a session musician. I think writting a full and complexe song (as most Paul Simon songs are) is more like finding 100 ideas and then you arrange them to something complete new.

Bof...I am kind of fed up with this debate, which we have had for several years and times.

Only the people involved in the production of the albums may evaluate all that properly.

As for Graceland, the song, it is one of the few tracks where I suspect the least the ´stealing thing´. It is true that the main chords came from something Ray was playing if I remember the 1997-8 documentary.

But the theme of the song (Elvis´ Mansion at 1st), that country sound guitar feel so much like America...then you add the Everly Brothers at the end. No doubt, the final product is something from Paul Simon (and Roy Halee!).
