 | Nick from Widnes England writes:
Back in 1965 whilst living London England Paul Simon was boarding at the home of Social Worker Judith Piepe. Well as you all are aware she campigned for the BBC Light Programe to record some of his songs for possible broadcast.
These songs where broadcast over a period of 5 days on a BBC Religious slot. These versions of early hits included I Am A Rock and Sounds Of Silence. Sadly the broadcasts where long since thought to have been lost.
This is where BBC Radio 2 in the UK steps in.
Wednesday 27th July 20011
7-8pm
BBC Radio 2
Mike Harding Show
In 1965, the Beeb coaxed a little known American musician, then struggling his way round Britain´s folk clubs, into a studio to record a few of his tunes. Despite having a bit of a cold, Paul Simon agreed..... Long thought to have been lost, the tapes of Simon´s sessions (including future classics I Am A Rock and The Sounds Of Silence) were finally uncovered in 2011, and Harding Places chunks of them here.
Mike Harding on his folk show will talk about the recordings and play them a rare gem for all us dedicated Paul Simon fans. we all know as a result of the broadcasts Paul went on to record his first solo album The Paul Simon Song Book.
For further details check out the Nike Harding Show Web Pages via the BBC Radio 2 web sight.
Wednesday 27th July 7-8 in the evening listen live or check the web for details of on line listening via BBC I Player
Please do not miss out!!

 | Bodo I only ask this because you did such a great job on the smart phone layout - would it be possible to highlight dates when mentioned in posts so that when you click on them they open into a calendar? Most emails have this facility . ESP for those of us in more senior category with poor memory! |

If you can log onto the BBC Web pages and get Mike Harding then you can hear a gem of early Paul Simon tunes recorded back in January 1965.
Broadcast songs on the show:
I Am A Rock
Bleaker Stret
Kathy´s Song
Sound Of Silence
Background information on the original recordings and to finish and bring Paul up to date Mike played Rewrite from So Beautiful Or So What.
Hope you can get a down load of the show .
As to the 1965 songs they sound verticality identical to the versions from The Paul Simon Song Book. Minus Paul´s introductions of course.

 | Wow -- thanks for sharing -- this is wonderful. He was quite young and green, but this kind of thing has always been my favorite part of his work. In my mind´s eye are the smoke-filled clubs and stage lights, the friends around the table, and the smell of coffee (and other things). |

 | Indeed. Its the point Paul often refers to as "just before fame".
These "Five to Ten" sessions and the "lucky" tape Heidi Berg slipped him must rank as the two most pivotal happenings in his solo career. |

 | David from UK says:
Excellent performances...interesting to hear Bleecker Steret performed slightly slower than even other PS performances from this period. I also thought the show was well presented by Mike Harding. A couple of thoughts :
- Mike said that the tapes had been lost and recently rediscovered. There were some BBC radio perfomances included in the BBC´s radio 6-part history of PS and history of S&G shows that were broadcast in the 80´s and 90´s. Are these the same performances?
- "despite having a cold..." Jeez, that was 1965, Paul had a cold at Glastonbury this year, i´d always thought he was very in tune with the UK climate having lived here for a year, but i´m starting to think he´s a very fragile flower indeed.
Great show. |

 | Just re listened to Part 1,Two Teenagers" of The BBC radio series 6 part history of Paul Simon and S and G which was recently repeated on BBC2. The presenter states the Five to Ten tapes had been found and there is an interview with Judith Pieppe in which she states Paul recorded 12 songs for the session in an hour. They then play ´A Most Peculiar Man" and "Bleeker Street" from the tapes plus introductory comments from Paul. They are the same tapes that were played last week so it looks like the tapes were found in the 90´s unless they lost them again. It is great to hear these very early versions of the songs.
Maybe Paul is susceptible to colds. "All that winter we shared a cold"
