Shhhh! This article was ´sposed to be kept secret and shredded. I read it when it first appeared - showed it to a couple of friends but told them as far as I was concerned, I was in a crowd of 500k. ;)

I doubt the people at the CP ´91 concert were each taking up "five to seven square feet" - sounds like political ex post justification more than any kind of science to me.

Well, what I remember form the NY Philharmonica Orchester show was, that many/most people where sitting on blankets. So 5-7 square meters would sound okay, not? If there were only 48.000 at the Bon Jovi concert I doubt any number higher than 70.000 (in the complete area). 500.000 or more is a myth.

But what is more interesting: Did they really count all people with their click-counters? They said they gave away free tickets before the show, but when they did not know how many people can stand there, how many tickets did they print and give away?
How did they prevent people from walking into the area without a ticket? I mean, there is no big fence or something, just a (think so called) police line.

Ok, my own calculation.
The great lawn has a size of about 52.000 qm² (ellipse 300*220m)
The small lawn in the back maybe 10.000 qm² (just 100*100)
But many many people where also standing in areas far away from the lawn, I just watched the first seconds of the video, people have been standing in an area of (300x430) meters in the wood.
I have an area of 15.000 qm² close to the first ellipse, and
another area of 35.000 qm² in the broader area in the woods.

So it all depends on how many people you put on 1 m²

4 people is really a lot
1 is not so much...think the new calculation was with around 1,5 people (5-7 sq fett per person)

I am generous, and say everywhere on the lawn there have been 4 people/m²
And in the woods 1 person. (even if you can not go there...)
That makes 250.000 people on the lawn (62,000 m²), and another 50.000 people in the wood

So 300.000 might be the absolute maximum. If you only put 2 people on the lawn per m² you get a number of 175.000 people.

I would definately say that the Bon Jovi number is much too low. It was just for fun for them to count, so they did not care if anyone didn´t have a ticket.

On the video it is hard to tell if those people at the PS show are sitting or standing...we need a HD Blue Ray for that, now we have a serious reason why! My guess is they are all standing because also in the back the pattern looks like the same as in front of the stage. 4 is a good number but maybe even too high.

Found a better picture: People are sitting there. I would say that decreases the number to 2 people per m².
So around 170.000 would be a possible number. But I guess it is less.
More than 46.000 definately.
