Does anyone know the history of this song? What prompted Paul Simon to write it?

From what I saw in Paul Simons biography, it was a message of some kind to Artie. Just like The Only Living Boy In New York was. Remember, they were in the middle of seperating at the time, though not really knowing it yet.

What do you think he means by the line, "I´ve been waiting all my life"?

I am trying to remember the lyrics to the whole song, ( I will listen to it when I get home) but I think he means in some way that he has been waiting all his life to break free, and strike it out on his own....musically speaking I mean.
I could be wrong. I will listen to it later and let you know. It is a great song though.

Ok, maybe this will help. This is what I wrote for the album discussion on BOTW.

Song For The Asking´ is again a beautiful song and stands side by side with TOLBINY imo. It´s almost a platonic Love song. I almost get the feeling Paul´s saying "come back home, and I´ll do all these things for you because I love you and I need you back home. I´m missing you like hell....I´ll change just for you! Just come home!...Please!"

I think Me has got it. I read that same type of thing somewhere. I LOVE this song, by the way.

I think this song was written for his wife Peggy...

I must admit, that isn´t something I have read or heard.

The thing I mentioned I heard on a special radio series about Paul, but I can´t rmeber if it was Paul who said it or Roy Halee.

Okay, I really, really like the way Me interpreted it - I´d never thought about it before and now I keep thinking it was obvious. :)
