so here we are, finally, at the first solo Paul Simon album with all new material. i really Love this album. it isnt my favorite, but it does have some of my favorite songs.

Everything Put Together Falls Apart, Run That Body Down, Me and Julio and one of my personal favorites, Congratulations. each of these songs i could listen to over and over again, although, i must say that Me and Julio is the elast liked out of that pack of favorites. those, less known, songs are some of Pauls greatest and are such a great sign of the good things to come. i am excited to start getting onto the solo stuff and hearing everyones thoughts. DISCUSS! :^)

Track Listing:

Mother And Child Reunion
Duncan
Everything put together falls Apart
Run that Body down
Armistic Day
Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
Peace Like A River
Papa Hobo
Hobo´s Blues
Paranoia Blues
Congratulations

The album is not my favourite, but as you say, shows such promise of things to come (while of course including some v.good material). However the shining light for me of this album is Me and Julio, i´m not sure there is a song in the world that can lift you as much as this song can do, with its fast paced bouncy rhythm and light hearted feel. Ok, so its only a personal view but this track is quite close to my heart!!!

I worship thsi album. I don´t think it´s my favourite, but it´s pretty close.

I LOVE "Run That Body Down", "Congratulations", "Mother & Child Reunion", and "Duncan" best of all. I don´t like "Armistice Day" too much, don´t know why. Besides that, I like or Love all the rest.

I think this album is truly diverse, and that´s what makes it so addictive for me. I mean, "Paranoia Blues" really IS blues, and it´s got an instrumental "Hobo´s Blues", it´s got folk in there "Duncan", reggae "Mother & Child Reunion" . . . it´s got it all.

Great lyrics, too. And really cool guitar work, as in "Peace Like A River". Amazing how Paul´s writing matured over the years, isn´t it?

Oh another great album of Paul´s. I must admit, unlike S&G albums I cannot put this in order because I like them all for varying reasons and to put them in order of most favourite I find impossible.

First thing I like about this album is the fact that although Paul wrote the S&G material, this sounds fresh and very different from those albums.

It is very obvious from the start where the lushness of S&G came from and it wasn´t Paul.

I´m not going to go through every song, so I´ll pick a couple here and there. this doesn´t mean I favour them more over other tracks, it´s just....well lets just get on or I´ll be here all night lol!

Peace Like A River ~ I Love the tittle for a start and the tempo. The guitar playing is wonderful and Paul voice is very flutey, something I feel is very common through out the album.

Paranoia Blues ~ Hehehe I feel for him as I can be VERY paranoid and so I think it captures the feeling very well. And also another great tempo.

Duncan ~ I think this is just a great song, the imagery is amazing. The way he describes his sexual encounter with the girl who was preaching from the bible :-)

And the imagery of this kid in a motel listening to the couple in the next trying to win a prize....brilliant (ok this is probably a fave song...lol)

Me and Julio....~ This song leaves you feeling curious about what these kids got caught doing. Paul has always felt it was something sexual...and that was my thought when I first heard it.

Congratulations ~ Hehehe if Paul had been a woman I´d have said he was being a bit bitchy in this one...lol It´s the tone of his voice I guess. But it´s also rather sad, talking about divorce etc.

Hmmmm.....I don´t feel this has been my best review of an album, but I´ve had a tiring week and not got my thoughts together. I may come back to this one, if I get the chance.

Hugs

Me

I thing Paul Simon album sounds interesting, it´s different as his another albums.
I like Duncan, Mother and child..., Me and Julio (it´s my number one :-)) and Run That Body Down.
I´m glad, that Paul made this kind of his music records only in this album. I don´t like country :-)). But Paul´s guitar parts are great

I have mixed feelings about this album.
I like 50% of the songs very much, these are one of Paul´s best songs.

But I can´t stand the other 50%.
Duncan is such a great song that I really hope Paul will play it live again one day - with a horn section! And I like this version of Me and Julio more than the new one with it´s e-guitars...

But I rarely listen to songs like Papa Hobo, Hobo´s Blues (was Paul a Hobo in that time?) Paranoia Blues... Armistic Day...Congratulations. It would be interesting to know what Paul thinks about these songs today - does he like these songs now?

I think the album only became a hit (and it really was good selling IMO) because of the outstanding songs ´Me and Julio´ and ´Mother And Child Reunion´... without one of these 2 songs I think we would only know about it as a flop like H&B.
You can cleary see that there was a development in Paul´s music from ´Paul Simon´ to ´There goes rhymin Simon´ and ´Still crazy´. he got the Grammy for ´Still crazy´, and then he tried something new, he made a Movie and Soundtrack.
The Hit´s are on all of those 3 albums, and all have the same quality. But the other (unknown) songs became better and better.

About Duncan, I have always had a question I always forgot to ask but what´s the meaning for " People in the next room bound to wind a prize. They´ve been at it all night long" ??? It´s about 20 years now that I can´t sleep because I wonder what Paul means ! :-)And I really need some rest now ! lol !

Nathalie, I´m pretty sure you have a good feeling about what Paul means when he sings this verse ;-) You just wont tell it to us. LOL

Who can think about other verses like this one from Pauls songs...?

It´s another one of those nudge, nudge, wink, wink moments lol!
